Jeffrey Obrow Biography
DIRECTOR / WRITER / PRODUCER
Jeffrey Obrow is well known as a writer and director of independent horror, thriller and sci-fi films.
Jeffrey recently completed post-production on the intense horror thriller ONE BY ONE, based on his original screenplay. The film centers on an edgy midnight talk radio host who solves people’s moral dilemmas. When a mysterious caller reveals that Paul and those closest to him are trapped in a deadly game, the night won’t end before terror strikes and shocking secrets come to light.
Jeffrey also just completed principal photography on PURSUED, an edgy teen thriller about a girl who makes a frightening discovery in the dark shadows of social media. Determined to avenge the brutal murder of a young woman, Lark is faced with a difficult choice: do nothing, or risk everything to bring justice to a sadistic psychopath. The film is currently in post-production and will be released in 2019.
Obrow began his career earning his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. Soon thereafter Obrow wrote, directed and produced THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, which achieved cult status when referred to in “Scream 2.” Due to audience demand, the film has recently been re-released on Blu-ray. Obrow's films have seen International distribution and enjoyed theatrical releases as well as premieres on HBO, SHOWTIME and THE SYFY Channel.
Obrow’s follow-up feature, THE POWER, garnered strong reviews and won the International Science Fiction and Fantasy Film Festival in Rome.
The creature chiller, THE KINDRED, starring Academy Award winners Rod Steiger and Kim Hunter, was Obrow’s next film. The movie, a fan favorite, inspired Anne Rice in her stirring novel, “The Witching Hour”, to make “The Kindred” an example of the kind of alien that would cause nightmares. Leonard Maltin noted in his review, “If you enjoy horror films you will enjoy The Kindred.”
THE SERVANTS OF TWILIGHT, based on Dean R. Koontz’s best-selling detective thriller, was Obrow’s next feature film. The original Showtime movie stars Bruce Greenwood and is based on Obrow’s adapted screenplay. Variety’s review describes the film as evoking “breathless suspense” and adds, “Obrow brings Koontz’s work to a fevered pitch, never letting the tension drop.”
Obrow followed with his adaptation of Bram Stoker’s haunting novel, LEGEND OF THE MUMMY, a compelling tale starring Academy Award winner Lou Gossett, Jr. The thriller premiered on HBO, kicking off their Halloween weekend run of frightening features.
His next film, THEY ARE AMONG US, premiered on the SYFY CHANNEL in heavy rotation and stars Alison Eastwood as a bounty hunter searching for the aliens that captured her father. The film is based on Obrow’s original story.
In addition to working on features, Obrow spent many years as a music video producer with the prestigious and innovative Propaganda Films. During Obrow’s time at Propaganda, their roster included celebrated directors David Fincher, Michael Bay, and the visionary Mark Romanek, with whom Obrow collaborated.
Recently, Jeffrey was credited as Production Consultant on ALMOST KINGS, the winning film in Netflix’s FIND YOUR VOICE competition.
Obrow has been an adjunct faculty member of USC's distinguished School of Cinematic Arts, where he has taught both a directing class and a popular music video course. He has been the school’s resident authority on the horror film genre, has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, and has been interviewed by The New York Times.
